RCV Resident Birds < Home

Education birds that reside permanently at RCV have injuries or problems that cannot be repaired or healed, and which prevent the bird from being able to survive in the wild on its own.

The decision to keep a non-releasable bird in captivity and utilize it for education purposes (as opposed to euthanasia, the only alternative) is not a simple one. Those birds which adapt well to life in captivity, and which can enjoy a comfortable life despite their problems, are good candidates to assist RCV in its efforts to educate the public about raptors, their habitat, and living with our native wildlife. These birds become ambassadors for their species. They also serve as foster parents for orphaned raptors to facilitate the youngsters' development and return to them to the wild - a duty that they perform often and well.
