HipsterBarred Owl

Why the name?
Because of the injury to her left hip. Besides, she is a "hip" bird!

Rehab history
Arrived at RCV in February of 2002. Placed in education status in April of 2002.

Story
Hipster was probably hit by a car, and was found by the side of a road. Her left hip joint was crushed, and she had lost the use of her left leg. There is no operation to restore barred owl hip joints. Over time, Hipster regained use of her left leg and talons; however, her left hip joint is fused and immobile. In the wild she would inevitably refracture that leg and starve to death. She moves around her small flight cage with ease, and has become an extremely calm bird who is an outstanding performer in public.

Hipster, in addition to helping with RCV education presentations, often serves as a foster parent to Barred Owl yougsters who arrive at RCV. Her presence prevents any imprinting of the chicks on humans, and she teaches the youngsters appropriate Barred Owl vocalization, socialization and fear of humans. A wonderful and most helpful gal!
