Lilli Gyrfalcon

Description
Gyrfalcon - silver phase female, hatched in 2001. Imprinted on humans.

Story
This magnificent Gyrfalcon was hatched and raised in captivity to be flown in falconry. She was trained and performed well for many years. However, in 2007 as she captured prey out west, a wild Golden Eagle grabbed her with both feet. Her owner managed to save her, but she sustained major internal damage from the eagle’s massive talons. She has regained her basic health, but despite many months of work she never regained her ability to fly well. She was donated to RCV in early 2009 as an education bird.

Species Story
Gyrfalcon are the largest of the world’s falcons. They live on the tundra, mostly above the Arctic Circle. Their usual prey is ptarmigan (a species of quail) or snowshoe hare. Gyrfalcon have been prized falconry birds for many centuries because of their strength and power. They are endangered in the wild, and the species will be in serious danger of extinction if global warming progresses.
