Smoke Eastern Screech Owl (Grey Phase)

Why the name?
Because of his smokey grey plumage.

Rehab history
Arrived in May of 2003.

Story
This Male Eastern Screech Owl was hit by a car near Fredericksburg, Virginia in May of 2003. He was determined to be non-releaseable because of severe loss of vision in both eyes.

Smoke is an outstanding education bird who is totally relaxed around people. Being relatively small (8 inches tall), totally non-threatening in size and demeanor to even very small children, and with a high "cuteness" factor, he is a regular and often requested participant in RCV education presentations.

Smoke comfortably flies around his small flight cage, and downs his ration of 2 or 3 small mice per night. He is a very vocal owl, and in season (December-February) he serenades us with screech owl territorial calls after dusk. A fun little guy!
